EcuTek News update for 8 October 2009 - FlashCAN Mazda DISI released

FlashCAN Mazda DISI is now available to enable mapping of the MZR 2.3 DISI (Direct Injection Spark Ignition) engine.

This engine is fitted to all of the Mazda 3/6 turbo 2.3 models from 2005 to 2010, variously named, 3MPS (Europe & Australia), Mazdaspeed3 (US), Axela (Japan), 6MPS, Mazdaspeed6, Atenza from 2007 to the latest Generation 2 model for 2010.

In addition this engine is fitted in the CX-7s available in most world markets with the DISI engine.

Mazda MPS tuning now availble EcuTek

This new software suite, which has been in development for over 18months, once again, gives the tuner full edit control of the important maps in this hugely complex ECU.

The Mazda MPS ECU carefully controls Engine Torque Output by accurately using the throttle butterfly to limit airflow into the engine. Even whilst the accel pedal may be fully depressed the throttle butterfly will only open around 60%. The Torque maps actual reduce Engine Torque Output by closing the throttle in the first four gears, so easy improvements can be made. FlashCAN Mazda DISI allows full access to the Torque Control system and the Torque Based Engine Load Control Strategy. FlashCAN Mazda DISI also provides accurate and high speed CAN Datalogging for easy data analysis.

EPS Motorsport

One of newest UK partners, David Rowe of EPS Motorsports held a big dyno/mapping event recently details of which can be seen here: http://www.scoobyprojects.co.uk/events/event1.shtml

David recently chose EcuTek as his preferred tool for Subaru mapping.

David's background is that he has been technical Manager for Motec Europe for the last 11 years which took him to the four corners of the planet mapping road and race cars. He has now set up as an independent mapper and consultant.

EPS have equipped themselves with all of our Mitsubishi and Subaru petrol products so is well placed to offer support across the trade, and if anyone knows about mapping David certainly does.

Probably his most high profile work has been the 850BHP Roger Clark Motorsport Gobstopper.

EcuTek News update for 25 August 2009 - FlashCAN Subaru Diesel released

Our latest FlashCAN Subaru Diesel product adds EcuTek programming and ROM editing support for the new Subaru Diesel engine.

This great new engine is fitted into the Subaru Legacy, Outback and Impreza.

With the focus on total manufacturer emissions, this engine will become the one that Subaru want to push sales onto as much as possible. It is already very popular across Europe so expect the US and Japanese markets to follow very soon.

The new FlashCAN Subaru Diesel product supports all models.

As with any diesel turbo there are huge gains to be had from tuning, but being one of the most recently introduced truly new engines, it uses the latest technology available to control the direct injection. This is an engine that it is simply not possible to fit fuel pressure interceptor boxes to.

Subaru Diesel now remap and tune using EcuTek

As you can imagine we have carried out a huge amount of test and development work on our own vehicle so, as usual, the software comes with some very well sorted example ROM files. We have also been working with a number of partners around the world for the testing of this new engine and in fact have been running a Group N rally car in a manufacturer championship in Europe as part of our development.

This is where a huge amount of the value is in EcuTek products. Our development and testing saves you tens if not hundreds of hours of dyno development.

EcuTek News update for 28 July 2009 - FlashCAN Mitsubishi Colt CZT released

Our latest FlashCAN Mitsubishi Colt CZT product adds support for the Mitsubishi Colt CZT Turbo.

This great little car is crying out for more power and now with an upgrade to the FlashCAN software you can tune this pocket rocket.

The software supports all turbo models from 2004 to the 2010 current facelift model.

We have carried out a lot of test and development work on our own vehicle so, as usual, the software comes with some very well sorted example ROM files.

Mitsubishi Colt CZT and CZC remap using EcuTek

This new product called FlashCAN Mitsubishi Colt CZT does currently only support the European specification vehicles with an air flow meter.

However the New Colt Ralliart (below) now utilises an air flow meter and we believe that this vehicle is being rolled out across the world. When it is, we can support markets such as the Far East, Japan and Australasia. Perhaps it will be launched in the US as well.

For those markets currently getting the JDM version of this model, please keep an eye on your manufacturer website to see when the new car is coming. If it has an air flow meter then we support this model.

EcuTek News update for 3 July 2009

At last we are allowed to officially announce that we have been the technical partner on the entire FQ project for Mitsubishi Motors in the UK.

The FQ range has meant development of the models:
FQ300 Manual
FQ330 Manual
FQ360 Manual
FQ300 SST
FQ330 SST

And finally the astonishing FQ400 which we believe to hold the record for the highest specific power output per litre of any production car ever sold. It must be true, it is on Wikipedia! All of these FQ models retain the standard ECU but utilise EcuTek software.

Development testing of both the car and the software was carried out simultaneously by our partner in New Zealand WRC Developments. Having a car available to us there meant that we were able to carry out almost 24 hour a day development. WRC testing during our nights with us updating and developing the software during their nights. In addition to our testing, a race car was built for Mitsubishi but with totally stock FQ400 spec engine and mapping. This engine completed two 24 hours races.

EcuTek are pleased to be able to announce it's involvement in the Official Mitsubishi UK race programme.

Mitsubishi UK decided that the best place to publicise the strength and power of the EVO X is in endurance racing.

They commissioned a car build by ADR Motorsport and EcuTek was asked to produce a 400BHP package for the engine capable of running for 24 hours.

http://www.adrmotorsport.com/news.php?newsid=46

The request was that the engine remain completely standard apart from external modifications.

We took the brief so seriously that we did not change the spark plugs, nor did we lift the cam cover or remove the sump. We changed the oil, fitted a new turbo and higher flow injectors. The engine is totally stock, it using the stock air filter and airbox and a high flow exhaust with catalyst.

The car competed in it's first event last weekend at the Britcar 24 Hour race at Silverstone.

Like all new car builds everything was last minute. The car missed qualifying and as it crossed the line for the start of the race it had completed a grand total of 5 laps and for one of those it was on fire!! (the turbo oil feed pipe union failed).

The single aim of entering this race was to prove the endurance of the car and not to worry about position.

The bare fact that the car finished in 25th place does not do justice to it's performance. The final position was due to a fuel tank problem which meant we could neither fill the tank up or run it to empty, meaning we had to pit 45 times compared to others who pitted as little as 9 times.

It produced a fastest lap 30 minutes from the start and again 30 minutes from the end. That shows its class. It completed 1651 miles (2657kms) without an engine hitch.

We ran a PC in the car and using FlashCAN we datalogged the whole race. We were able to use remote desktop via GPRS to access this PC and analyse the log files. This allowed us to make changes to the ROM file during the race and then program a spare ECU in the garage and when the car came in for a pit stop we could change the ECU.

We only had to do this three times as we made some fuel and boost trims.

EcuTek News update for 1 September 2008 - FlashCAN Mitsubishi Diesel released

EcuTek are pleased to announce the launch of the full editing and programming FlashCAN Mitsubishi Diesel software suite for the current Mitsubishi Diesel 2.5 and 3.2 litre 4 cylinder engine vehicle ECUs.

These vehicles are variously named L200 or Triton and Shogun or Pajero in different markets around the world.

L200 - Triton 2.5 and 3.2 models range from 2005 to current and Shogun - Pajero models are supported from 2006 with the introduction of the Di-DC Direct Injection Common rail engines. In 2008 the Shogun - Pajero model is additionally fitted with the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). This model is also supported.

We currently support over 50 different ECUs from around the world.

Mitsubishi Pajero ECU now tuned using EcuTek

The software also features the ability to read and clear all DTCs.

Another highly valuable part of this product is our detailed explanations of the maps and also the tuning methods that we have employed. For those tuners with limited diesel tuning experience we offer the product that you need to help you understand, what is becoming a very important sector of the tuning industry.

Diesel injection systems are now very complex and like their petrol equivalents, require mapping of the factory data. Due to the amount of closed loop checks and air flow and smoke limits , it is no longer possible to fit the cheap "smoke boxes" which fool the ECU into jacking up the fuel pressure.

Mitsubishi Pajero ECU now remap using EcuTek

We have seen dramatic power and torque improvements from both the 2.5 and the 3.2 and also recorded improved fuel consumption.

Figures we have are:

For the 2.5 Di-DC
136PS goes to 175PS with torque increases from 314Nm to 390Nm

For the 3.2 Di-DC
158PS goes to 200PS with torque increasing from 360Nm to 430Nm

EcuTek Wins at US National Club Rally Championship

The US National Club Rally Champions this year, Steve Gingras, of Elk River, Minnesota, and co-driver Bill Westrick, of Royal Oak, Michigan, campaigned their open class 2002 Subaru WRX running an ECU tuned with EcuTek tools. Gingras, now a three time winner of the overall title and regular top ten national level contender, clinched the championiship at the Doo Wop rallies this month.

Ken Cole, of Rally Performance (based in Pennsylvania, USA) noted that the Gingras Rally Sport team had approached them earlier in the year about an ECU remap using EcuTek technology. "Steve was curious about replacing the Link ECU that they were running in the car at the time. We had a candid discussion about the capabilities of a remapped ECU; although he was giving up anti-lag, he felt that the EcuTek could get him a better end product without the headaches. He had continued to get high EGTs despite efforts to get the car dialed in with the Link." The EcuTek remap by Rally Performance cured all that; the first ECU that the Gingras team used, in fact, was mapped at RP and sent to Steve via courier. He plugged it in, tested, and went rallying with good results. "We knew that Steve was running an uprated turbo and were concerned with the boost curve, since we were mapping remotely - but made a best effort at getting it conservatively close, so that he could go racing. While the boost curve wasn't optimized and we had to leave some power on the table, we got him up and running reliably". Steve was enthusiastic - "the high EGTs and other headaches were solved, and we could immediately focus on the other issues that needed to be done in the short time before the event". It should be noted that, unlike some of the other open class cars, Steve's car (thanks to the use of the capable OEM ECU) cranks to a start instantly - even in the frozen tundra of northern US rallying !

Just before the CR National Championship, Rally Performance flew to Elk River, Minnesota to get the car dialed in. While one more visit may be in the future for fine tuning in normal weather, Cole was pleased with the results: "The robustness of the EcuTek tools allows us to do real time, on-road analysis and then remapping, without forcing dyno time in each case. We were tweaking until 2am in the Minnesota wintertime. Steve's car is just super, there is actually a bit more power to be had without pushing too hard for a competition car."

Gingras turned around and won the national title: "Today we had a battle," Gingras said, who claimed his third CRNC overall (two in Production GT) and first in Open Class competiton. "We were tied after the first three stages today and then going into the last stage it was full speed ahead, charging blind into Dennis' (Martin's) dust. During the first day, Gingras won outright and held off challenges from other front runners; although he was back by three seconds on day 2, his comfortable margin from day 1 carried them to the title.

EcuTek Visit Iceland for Drag Racer Tuning

When you are offered an all expenses paid trip to such a dramatic country, how can you possibly say no ! Stephen Done, EcuTek software designer, visited Halldór Jónsson to custom map his Impreza Turbo. This highly modified combined road car and drag racer already had full Blitz/GGR exhaust system, including Power Engineering Maxim racing manifold, Blitz Induction, intercooler splitter, turbo intake pipe and custom air intake scoops. Together with a standard EcuTek performance ECU, this car already held the 2 litre class record for standing quarter mile at 13.081 seconds. After custom mapping to take account of Iceland's cooler climate and the highly capable manifold, this time was reduced to 12.846 seconds ! Halldór's next purchase is likely to be a hybrid turbo which should release even more potential. And Iceland had better watch out next year when Halldór intends to build an STI 7 based race car... with nitrous !
